It is no secret that as a nation, we use far too much plastic and a lot is unnecessary. Home fragrances are no different so we would like to delve into shopping Plastic Free Home Fragrances. When purchasing a product, whether it is online or from a store, you can expect the product itself to contain plastic. It’s likely the product’s packaging will be made from plastic and any delivery packaging too.
Often there is plastic that can’t even be seen, such as bags or packaging that appear to be made from paper but are actually coated in a microfilm of plastic. Almost all of this will then go into the bin, and then ends up being dumped in a landfill. Once in landfill, they become micro-plastics, and rain washes these micro plastics into the environment. Micro-plastics cause all the long term problems as they are consumed by wildlife such as birds, fish and small mammals. These microplastics then sit in their stomachs and animals die from toxins that come from these microplastics.
What Can You Do?
Whilst you may feel as though the amount of plastic you use as a consumer is out of your hands and it is down manufacturers to make better decisions. There are still things you can do to ensure that you’re cutting back on the amount of plastic you’re purchasing. To help anyone who is shopping for home fragrances, our team here at Twoodle have put together a list of different things you should keep an eye out for when buying candles or room diffusers that may contain plastic. Checking the following can help you to ensure you’re always shopping plastic-free.
The product’s packaging
Almost half of the plastic that is used every year is packaging alone and it is impossible not to notice how much is used on the home fragrances that you buy. Whilst these things are easy to spot, here are some less noticeable plastic items to be aware of;
– Labels on candles. Many are unaware that the label/s on the side of their candle is likely to have a plastic coating.
– Tealight cups – on top of the obvious plastic packaging, some tealight cups can be made from plastic as well.
– Caps on diffusers. Often, the cap that you take off a diffuser before using it will also be made from plastic.
It is these smaller things that you should look out for when buying candles and room diffusers. Ideally, find a store that uses things like recycled boxes and hand-cut labels such as Twoodle Co. This way you won’t need to worry about single-use plastic in the packaging of your product.

The product itself
Many are unaware that the home fragrance products that they purchase may contain plastic and it isn’t just the packaging that they need to worry about. It can be harder to figure out whether there is actually plastic in the products that you’re purchasing, but here are a few things to look out for when buying candles and room diffusers.
– Diffuser sticks – sometimes, diffuser sticks are synthetic and made from polyester which is also a plastic.
– The glitter inside candles. Glitter is commonly used as decoration in or around the candle and of course, this is plastic.
– Epoxy resin lined tins. Whilst this isn’t necessarily in the product, sometimes candle tins are lined with epoxy resin which is plastic.
Looking out for these things can help to prevent you from accidentally buying candles or room diffusers that aren’t plastic-free. Aim to find a shop that uses things like natural diffuser twigs and eco glitter instead of the common plastic alternatives you tend to see.
At Twoodle Co we use natural diffuser sticks, eco glitter and do not line our tins. We believe in having a positive impact on the environment.
